[Uncharted Koreatown] Korea at the San Francisco Public Library

Updated: Apr 6

The Main Library - San Francisco Public Library has been a cornerstone of the city's literary and intellectual landscape since its establishment in 1879. Over the years, it has grown into a nationally recognized institution, earning the title of Library of the Year in 2018 from Gale/Library Journal for its commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity. As one of the city’s most democratic spaces, SFPL provides welcoming and accessible resources to all, including the Korean community.

A Hidden Korean History on the Shelves

Among its treasures is Account of a Voyage of Discovery to the West Coast of Corea, and the Great Loo-Choo Island (1818) by British naval officer Basil Hall. This book documents a pivotal moment in 1816, when British explorers presented books to local Korean officials—an event officially recorded in both Korean and British historical accounts. This exchange is now recognized as the first recorded introduction of the Bible to Korea, marking an early intersection of Korea’s history with Western religious texts.

This rare book, housed in SFPL’s collection under Call Number 915.19 H14, stands as a valuable record of early Western observations of Korea, offering insights into Korean geography, customs, and the first documented attempt at Christian book dissemination in the region.

A Korean Library Within the Library

While not extensive, SFPL’s Korean book collection occupies a modest yet meaningful space—several shelves in one section of the library. Located on the third floor, The Kresge Foundation International Center serves as a multilingual resource hub, offering literature and information for those who prefer to read in their native language. Visitors can browse a curated selection of Korean books, including works by well-known Korean authors, adding to the joy of discovering familiar stories in an unexpected place.

Korean Voices in the Heart of San Francisco

The presence of such a rich Korean collection in the heart of San Francisco underscores the city’s diverse cultural fabric. Whether exploring historic accounts or enjoying contemporary Korean literature, SFPL offers a gateway to Korea’s past and present—all within the walls of this historic institution.
