May 28, 2024 San Francisco, CA – the Korean American Restaurant Association of San Francisco (KARA SF), led by President Jiyeon Choi, delivered emergency relief supplies and meals to the victims of the Jones Senior Homes Apartment fire. The relief items, including Korean food products, were generously provided by Woori Market and distributed by Woori Market employees at the temporary shelters SureStay and La Luna Inn. The relief supplies were distributed twice, on May 20 and May 27, to ensure continued support for the displaced residents.
The fire, which broke out on May 10 at the Jones Senior Homes Apartment, a senior care facility in Japantown, San Francisco, displaced 51 households. Many of the affected residents are elderly Korean Americans with mobility issues. These individuals were evacuated without basic necessities and have since been residing in temporary shelters. Initially, they were expected to return home by the end of the month, but due to delays in restoration, they will be relocated to Extended Stay America Premier Suites in the City of Alameda on May 28, where they will stay for an additional month.
Hakwoon Kim, the representative of Woori Market, expressed regret over the extended displacement of the elderly residents, stating, "It's unfortunate that our elderly neighbors have to move so far due to the prolonged shelter stay. Continuous community support, including providing balanced meals, is essential." KARA SF is also considering further support due to the extended relocation period.
Korean American Restaurant Association of San Francisco Shares Chuseok Holiday Meals with Fire Victims
September 18, 2024 San Francisco, CA – On September 17, in celebration of Chuseok, the Korean American Restaurant Association of San Francisco (KARA SF, President Jiyeon Choi) delivered traditional holiday meals to residents affected by the fire at Jones Senior Homes Apartments.
Following the fire on May 10, residents of Jones Senior Homes Apartments have been living in temporary shelters for over four months. Most of them are elderly Koreans with limited mobility, facing significant challenges in daily life due to the extended period of displacement. Fortunately, in early September, some apartments were restored, allowing certain families to return home in time for Chuseok. KARA SF visited these households to personally deliver traditional Chuseok foods, including songpyeon (Korean rice cakes), offering a heartfelt gesture of comfort to the elderly residents worn out by their prolonged evacuation. This event was a meaningful opportunity to share the warmth of the Chuseok holiday and to welcome the neighbors back to their homes.
Since the fire, KARA SF has continued to support affected residents, initially by providing emergency relief supplies and meals. President Jiyeon Choi stated, “With many residents still unable to return home, ongoing community support is crucial. KARA SF is committed to assisting each and every one of them until they can safely return to their homes.”
